E5000 Sputter Coater

The original Polaron sputter coater. Launched in the early 1970s and discontinued circa 1987, the E5000 was the first commercially successful SEM sputter coater. NB: Many E5000 models pre-date the introduction of the 'cool' (magnetron) sputtering head and therefore tend to generate more heat on the surface of specimens, compared to modern instruments. Uses 57mm diameter disc targets.

PS3 Sputter Coater

A small chamber version of the E5000. Discontinued circa 1988.

E5100 'Cool' Sputter Coater

Pioneering annular head sputter coater. The first SEM coater with a 'cool' magnetic deflection head. Replaced by SC510 circa 1988. Chamber is 155mm/6" ID and uses an 82mm OD annular target.

E5150 FTM-controlled 'Cool' Sputter Coater

FTM-controlled version of the E5100. Discontinued circa 1988.

E5175 Large Chamber 'Cool' Sputter Coater

Large chamber (200mm/8" ID) version of the E5100. Uses 117mm OD annular targets. Discontinued circa 1988.

E5200 Automatic Sputter Coater

An automatic sputter coater. Chamber is 155mm/6" ID. Uses 57mm diameter disc targets. Discontinued circa 1988.

SC7610 Sputter Coater

Chamber is 100mm/4" ID. Uses 57mm diameter disc targets. Discontinued circa 1997 and replaces by SC7620.

E6200 Carbon Coater

Originally manufactured by Emscope, then latterly by Bio-Rad followed by VG, the TB500 was also manufactured in an automatic format (TB500A).

SC7640 'Cool' Sputter Coater

The vacuum chamber is 155mm/6" ID and uses an 82mm OD annular target. Discontinued in 2009.

The vacuum chamber is 250mm/10" ID and uses an 82mm OD annular target. Discontinued in 2009.


CC7650 SEM Carbon Coater

The vacuum chamber is 155mm/6" ID and uses either carbon fibre or carbon rod evaporation. Discontinued in 2009.

E6500 'Mini' High Vacuum Evaporator

Bench top evaporator for carbon and metals with horizontal vacuum chamber. Discontinued in 2009.

K1250X 'Off-Column' Turbo Cryo-SEM Preparation System

Off-column cryo-SEM system from the former Emitech product range. Discontinued in 2010.

K575X Turbo-Pumped Chromium Sputter Coater

Compact, turbomolecular-pumped sputter coater optimised to deposit fine metal coatings for SEM, FEG-SEM and thin film applications. Discontinued in 2010.

K950X Turbo-Pumped Carbon Evaporator

Typical applications included support films and replicas for TEM and conductive coatings for SEM, EDS and WDS. Featured an automatic pumping sequence, and rotating specimen table to give even coating of specimens with irregular surfaces. Discontinued in 2010.

K400X and K450X SEM Carbon Coaters

The K450X Rotary-Pumped Carbon Coater was primarily designed for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) specimen coating applications (eg EDS and WDS). With fully-automatic control and an automatically operated source shutter, the system protected specimens during carbon out-gassing. The K400X Semi-automatic Carbon Coater was a semi-automatic version of the K450X with manual control of the shutter operation, and also fitted with a static specimen stage. Discontinued in 2010.

K350 Sputter/Glow Discharge/Etch Attachment

The K350 was a modular sputtering and glow discharge attachment for carbon coaters. It allowed surface modification to be carried out in a single unit without breaking vacuum. Discontinued in 2010.

Modern equivalent: One option is the Q150R 10262 Glow discharge insert (used to modify surface properties, eg hydrophobic to hydrophilic conversion), or alternatively another modern equivalent is the Q150T 10837 Glow discharge insert (due to be released in late 2010)


K500X and K550X Sputter Coaters

The K500X and K550X were digitally-controlled sputter coaters, ideally suited for SEM and other coating applications. Designed for sputtering non-oxidising metals - gold (Au) fitted as standard. Discontinued in 2010.

K100X Glow Discharge System

The K100X was a simple, free-standing glow discharge system, typically used for hydrophobic to hydrophilic conversion of carbon coated TEM grids. Discontinued in 2010.

K575XD Turbo-Pumped Dual Head Sputter Coater

The K575XD was a compact, dual head turbomolecular-pumped sputter coater optimised to deposit fine metal coatings for SEM, FEG-SEM and thin film applications - allowing sequential sputtering of two metals without the need to break vacuum. Discontinued in 2011.

K650X Large Chamber Sputter Coater with Triple Target Head

The K650X was a digitally-controlled, large chamber sputter coater, ideally suited for SEM and other metal coating applications. Fitted with three individual sputtering heads and a rotating specimen stag, it was rotary-pumped and suitable for non-oxidising metals. Discontinued in 2011.

K675X and K675XD High Resolution Large Chamber Sputter Coaters

The K675X was a large chamber (300mm) fully-automatic, turbo-pumped sputter coater that allowed complete 8" /200mm wafers to be coated with oxidising and non-oxidising metals. The K675XD version also had two independently controlled sputtering heads. Discontinued in 2011.

K150X Film Thickness Monitor and Controller

The K150X Film Thickness Monitor (FTM) was an easy-to-use module for sputter coaters and thermal evaporators that allowed accurate and reproducible measurement of deposited layers, and was also able to terminate the deposition process at a predetermined thickness.

Modern equivalent: Most of our current coater systems have optional film thickness monitor (FTM) attachments. See individual products for details.


PP2000 and PP2000T Cryo-SEM Preparation Systems

The PP2000 and PP2000T were column-mounted, gas-cooled cryo preparation systems suitable for most makes and models of SEM, FE-SEM and FIB/SEM. Both systems included all the facilities needed to rapidly freeze and transfer specimen, plus tools for cold fracturing, controlled sublimation and specimen coating. Cold trapping in the cryo preparation chamber and SEM chamber ensured the whole process was frost free. Discontinued in 2011.

SC7640-CF, SC7640-CR and SC7620-CF Carbon Accessory Power Supplies

The SC7640-CF, SC7640-CR and SC7620-CF carbon attachments were modular add-ons for our sputter coaters, allowing carbon fibre or carbon rod evaporation. Each attachment used the existing chamber and vacuum system of the sputter coater and was therefore a cost-effective and efficient method for the evaporation of carbon for SEM applications. Discontinued in 2011.

K25X Peltier-Cooled SEM Stage

The K25X was a peltier-driven SEM cooling stage for VP/EP and ESEM. The stage could be cooled to sub-zero temperatures for specimens which may be sensitive at ambient temperature, subject to beam damage, or may be otherwise sublime at ambient temperatures. Discontinued in 2011.
