Fungi - including yeast
Cryo-SEM: baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) cell trans-membrane particles (in hexagonal arrays)
Specimen prepared by cryo-SEM using a Quorum PP3000T integrated onto an Hitachi SU8020 FE-SEM. The specimen was rapidly frozen in nitrogen slush, fractured and coated with 4 nm of platinium (Pt). 10 nm yeast cell transmembrane particles (in hexagonal arrays) can be observed.
Cryo-SEM: Aspergillus fumigatus
Aspergillus fumigatus is widespread in nature and is typically found in soil and decaying organic matter. It is one of the most common Aspergillus species that cause diseases in individuals with an immunodeficiency. Specimen cryo prepared using a Quorum PP2000T.

Cryo-SEM: mycorrhiza (plant root fungi)
In a mycorrhizal association the fungus colonizes host plant roots, either intracellularly or extracellularly. They are an important component of soil life and soil chemistry.

Cryo-SEM: field mushroom (Agaricus campestris)
Field mushroom (Agaricus campestris) and showing basidospores. Fractured at -140°C and sputtered coated with 5 nm of Pt. Preparation carried out on the Quorum PP3010T fitted to a JEOL 7800F FE-SEM.
Cryo-SEM: Penicillium chrysogenum
Penicillium chrysogenum is a common fungus, mostly found in indoor environments, such as damp or waterdamaged buildings. It can also be found on salted food products.
It is the source of several + - lactam antibiotics, most notably penicillin.
P. chrysogenum normally reproduces by forming dry chains of spores (or conidia) from brush-shaped conidiophores.
Specimen was rapidly frozen in slushy nitrogen, fractured at -140°C, sublimated at -90°C for 3 minutes and coated with 5 nm of platinium.
Cryo preparation carried out on the Quorum PP3010T
fitted to a JEOL 7800F FE-SEM.
Cryo-SEM: powdery mildew on barley plant leaf
Cryo-SEM: smut fungus (Urocystis anemones)
Urocystis is a genus of smut fungi containing plant pathogens, which infect grass species and other plants.
Cryo-SEM: mold on rice cake
