Diatom in Black Volcanic Sand 

The SEM image shows a diatom found in black volcanic sand from Tenerife, collected by aspiring scientist Samuel, age 10. The sand was dried at 60 °C for 30 minutes, coated with 5 nm Pt using the Rota Cota stage on the TurboQ ES, and imaged using a Thermo Scientific Apreo ChemiSEM. Colourised by Steve Gschmeissner.
